I can't fathom how I feel grief for someone I've never met in life. Such was Anythony's larger-than-life persona. I remember being 21, having moved from India to the other side of the world & watching his show for the first time with a child-like sense of wonder as he traveled to places around the world I didn't even know existed & met people with names I couldn't pronounce :) Maybe he planted the first seeds of wanderlust in me, I can't tell. The incredible thing is, despite having traveled widely, he never claimed to have conquered it all, seen it all. He portrayed countries & cultures from the point of view of a curious spectator. Humbly, but unapologetically. He had a way with words, people, food & they resonated. There are similar shows today but he paved the path for tourism in its most raw form. I didn't always agree with what he said but I'll celebrate him for the trailblazer & gifted storyteller he was, for making travel so accessible & bringing the world a little closer that way. He has often discussed his depression, drug abuse but everything he said was cloaked with his gregarious confidence, wit, & humor, that perhaps the obvious signs were overlooked. As humans, we tend to equate travel, success, & fame with happiness & having "made it in life". He has shown that you can have a zest for life & adventure & still grapple with depression. I come from a country where poor mental-health is seen as an "artificial problem" or "madness". It's common to say "There are poor/distressed people in the world with real problems". The reality is that mental health doesn't discriminate & neither should we. I don't have a clinical condition so I can't speak for the people who do. Someone I love tried to take their life when I was young & luckily, that didn't happen. The person I speak of is in a better place today. Lima's unofficial airport aka where people go to get high. *Allegedly* ✈️#lima #peru #cliff #cliffsoflima Happiest when I'm working remotely from a place I have never been before. 🇵🇪‍♀️ P:S back home, but the familiarity of home and faces + routine is pretty nice too #barranco, #lima, #peru #workwhereyouwander People have fierce opinions about visiting Peru's capital Lima; "It's a gastronomical mecca, definitely VISIT", "It's just a gateway to the rest of Peru", "so foggy & gloomy; gtfo asap". I decided to check it out anyway. I was pleasantly surprised, I really liked Lima. A few interesting takeaways: * Lima, home to 8 million people, is Peru's largest city. * It's the 2nd largest city to be built on a desert, next to Cairo in Egypt. WHAT? I saw no signs of a former desert in this metropolis save for sand on the beaches. * Oh wait, there are lots of cacti in Lima. I suppose that counts. Lol. * Some pre-Incan group(s) built water canals to irrigate these lands & they are used even today. Meanwhile, I still haven't set up any Ikea furniture by myself to date. Thank god for Gree. * Lima is on the Pacific Coast. Desert city on the coast. * El Malecon, a 6-mile-long stretch of parks winds along the coast. I grew up near a beach, but seeing Lima's beach from that eagle's view was amazing. * Lima is a big surfing destination. Lots of crazy peeps surfing even in the frigid waters. ‍♀️ * Oh yes, winter is coming now the Southern Hemisphere.❄️ * There are many black vultures in Lima. They do a fab job of cleaning up the city. "Swachh Lima", anyone? heh🦅 * Lima was "founded" in 1535 by Spanish conquistador Pizarro. The buildings in the historical center date back to the colonial period from then until Peru's independence in 1821. Dark times! * There is a significant Chinese population in Lima. Lots of immigrants came here in 1849 to work on plantations. The Peruvian-Chinese cuisine called "Chifa" is a kind of a big deal here. There is even a Chinatown here. * Mercados are the beating heart of the city.
